The skin around your eyes certainly has a busy life. Think about it… each time we smile, blink or laugh we are using expressions that really put that delicate skin to work. With each facial movement every day, in combination with the fact that the skin around our eyes is much thinner than the rest of the face, AND that we have limited oil glands around the eyes to nourish the skin from within, it is a little wonder that this is where we will often see the first signs of ageing! So, do we really need to use an eye cream?? The answer is, most definitely yes!
When it comes to skincare, there is so much information out there, and so many products available, it begins to all get a little confusing as to what we actually need to use. We tend to try to keep our products to a minimum so that application each day is quick and simple. If there was one item that tends to be moved aside, it will often the eye cream. There seems to be a misconception that the creams we are using on the rest of our faces are good enough to use around the eyes too. Bring these up around the eyes and you are done right?? WRONG! Often the moisturisers that we use on our faces are made using much larger molecules than a specialised eye cream. These larger molecules are not able to be absorbed by the delicate eye tissue. This is why it is important to use a specific product for the eyes, which will make sure the ingredient goodness is getting to where it needs to be and not just sitting on the surface.
Selecting the right eye cream for you is a personal choice. There is a large range of options for you to choose from, but don’t let this be overwhelming for you. Narrow your choice down by first thinking about your skin concerns. Is it ageing for example, or just general hydration? Next, think about the consistency that you prefer. If it is a lighter/thinner product that you like to use, perhaps lean towards a gel, or a lightweight cream. However, if you are after a heavier, more nourishing product, you might consider more of a cream or even an eye balm. These will deliver the ingredients to the eyes, but also create a barrier on the surface to lock in moisture.

How to apply your eye cream.
After cleansing, and before your moisturiser, gently press a small amount of product to the eye area using only your fingertips. This is a very fragile area, so you do not want to use too much pressure or create any pulling of the skin. Apply morning and night under the eyes, to the side ( out to the hairline ) and above, going up to your brow. Some eye creams can also be applied to the eye lids, but please be sure you know if this is safe for your product before applying.
Once you have introduced an eye cream to your routine, you will soon be asking yourself why you did not do it sooner. Oh, one last tip… if using a gel, try popping it in the fridge for something a little special. The puffiness around your eyes will hate it.. which make us love it! Enjoy.x
