If you have oily skin, chances are you have tried multiple products to try and calm your skin down, and regulate all that oil. Creating an effective skincare routine for oily skin involves managing excess oil, preventing breakouts, and maintaining overall skin health. You want to make sure you are using a range of products that are easy to use, and that you enjoy using, ( so that you stick to it ) and most importantly, that will actually work.
Here's a basic skincare routine tailored for your oily skin, but remember, be patient. When changing up your skincare routine, or introducing new skincare products no matter what your skin type, you need to make sure you give your skin enough time to adjust and accept the newness. This may take a few weeks, but just keep going. It will be worth it in the long run!
Cleanser
Try using a gentle, foaming or gel-based cleanser twice a day (morning and night) to remove excess oil and impurities without over-drying. Be sure to do a double cleanse of a night time. The first cleanse will cleanse off your day, and the second will cleanse your skin.
Recommended ingredients: Salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or niacinamide. You might like to try Hydropeptide Cleansing Gel which is an all-in-one anti-aging gentle cleanser that effectively removes dirt and excess oil while toning and lifting away all traces of makeup without over-drying
Toner
Choose an alcohol-free toner to balance the skin's pH levels and control excess oil production. Ingredients like witch hazel or rose water can be beneficial.
Exfoliation
Exfoliate 1-2 times a week to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. Make sure to not over exfoliate your skin. If you like a granular exfoliant, use light hands and try one that is not too abrasive. We love the Skin Matrix AHA Exfoliating Scrub which uses gentle Jojoba beads to effectively exfoliate the skin whilst our signature AHA blend keeps pores clean and clear.
If your skin is sensitive or quite congested grain free exfoliant with ingredients like salicylic acid or glycolic acid is way to exfoliate your skin without further irritation.
Serum
Use a lightweight, oil-free serum such as Skin Matrix Skin Perfection Serum, or Cosmedix Clarity morning and night to address specific concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, or enlarged pores.
Key ingredients
- Niacinamide – This will calm irritation, regulate the sebum ( oil ) production, hydrate, and also help settle breakouts.
- Hyaluronic Acid – Just like giving the skin cells a big drink of water!
- Salicylic Acid – Bye Bye breakouts!
Spot Treatment
Spot treatments are the perfect way to target those pesky spots! Just make sure you are not too heavy handed, and that you are only using on the areas of concern. Our faves are Skin Matrix Hello Goodbye or the Sircuit Skin Fixzit. Simply apply to the skin underneath your moisturiser directly onto the spots. It’s that easy!
Oily Skin Moisturiser
Even oily skin needs hydration. Choose an oil-free, non-comedogenic oily skin moisturiser to keep the skin hydrated without clogging pores. If your skin is dehydrated ( lacking water ) it will naturally create more oil to compensate for the dryness. More oil, can mean more breakouts, so you want to make sure that you are using a water-based moisturiser morning and night.
Gel-based moisturisers are a great option if you do not like anything too heavy. They are quickly absorbed and get to work straight away. Try Ahava Time to Hydrate Active Moisture Gel Cream to Hydrate and strengthen the skin barrier while protecting from environmental aggressors and dehydration.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is crucial, even for oily skin. Using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher that is non-comedogenic is a must! Everyday! A mineral sunscreen opposed to a chemical product is great for an oily skintype, especially if you are breakout prone.
Remember that individual responses to skincare products vary, so it's essential to monitor how your skin reacts and adjust your routine accordingly.
