Whats all the fuss about Pepetides in Skin Care and why your skin loves them

Peptides are emerging as a key factor in any anti-aging regime as they are proving to be so versatile. Over the years we have seen many a product contain anti-aging ingredients such as Vitamin A (retinol or retinaldehyde), Vitamin C, and Niacinamide. Many of my clients have incorporated these vitamins into their skincare regime and are loving the effects these vitamins are having on their skin. With the emergence of Peptides, we are understanding the key role that these can play in an anti-aging regime.

So, what are peptides?

Well simply put, they are the building blocks that makeup protein. These building blocks are called amino acids. When they link together, they become the basis of protein which is pretty important considering our collagen is made up of …. Protein. Collagen peptides make up 80% of the dermal layer of the skin and the amount of collagen our skin contains declines as we age. The use of peptides in your skincare regime signals the skin to repair itself and encourages the skin to keep collagen production up and assists in keeping your dermal layer thick, the skin firm, and smooth.

The use of Peptides however is not to replace your Vitamin A, C and Niacinamide, they work in conjunction with these vitamins to best enhance anti-wrinkle, skin rejuvenation, elasticity enhancement, moisturizing and cell vitalization properties. I liken Peptides to giving your skin a protein shake. It provides the skin the tools it needs to create more collagen and elastin.

How to incorporate Peptides into your Skin Care Regime?

The great thing about Peptides is you can use them morning and night. Unlike Vitamin A which you cannot use whilst pregnant or lactating and it can make the skin photosensitive. Peptides are soothing, calming and restorative and do not dry the skin out like its Vitamin A counterpart can. I have been using our Platinum Peptide Cell-Peptide Serum every morning mixed with our Skin Matrix IQ Serum (you could also mix with our Skin Perfection Serum). You could also just use it on its own as your morning serum and then moisturise. We have included in our Platinum Peptide Cell-Peptide Serum licorice and bearberry extract for brightening and hyaluronic acid for skin hydration and of course Niacinamide, one of my favourite ingredients. Of an evening, use our Cell-Peptide Serum followed by our Vitamin A complex – Rebuild. Vitamin A and Peptides work in synergy and harmony to supply the skin with an array of necessary tools it requires to create new collagen and elastin. Of course, there are environmental aspects that impact collagen such as sun, stress, diet and lifestyle habits, so doing your best where you can in these areas such as always wearing sunscreen will aim to preserve the collagen you already have and give the skin the best chance at creating new collagen.

Some Peptides that feature in Cell-Peptide:

  • sh-Oligopeptide-1 – consists of amino acids that increase the rate of healing and skin renewal whilst slowing the thinning of the skin and ageing.
  • sh-Oligopeptide-2 – wound healing and cellular turnover
  • sh-Polypeptide-1- signalling protein similar in behaviour to Vitamin A
  • sh-Polypeptide-9 - Signals collagen renewal and wound healing
  • Sh-Polypeptide-11 - cell regeneration, wound healing and collagen and elastin synthesis
  • Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 - a peptide that can help repair visible skin damage and strengthen skin’s underlying supportive elements. Improves skin texture. Similar anti-aging benefits to retinol (Vitamin A).
  • Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 – skin-restoring, replenishes the surface of the skin and desensitizes the skin through reducing signal molecule interleukin-6 which causes inflammation in the skin. Less inflammation means less collagen breakdown.
  • Nicotiana Benthamiana Hexapeptide-40 sh-Oligopeptide-1 - Reduce roughness, improve elasticity and reduce wrinkle volume. Turn back the visible signs of ageing
