WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD EVERYONE HAVE IN THEIR SKINCARE ROUTINE - PART 2

Now that you have mastered your basic routine of cleansing and moisturising, it is time to start having some fun! Introducing exfoliation, treatment serums and a mask to your regular skincare will not only add some excitement for you, but your skin will love the extra additions.

So what is a serum?

Serums are a light weight, easily absorbed oil or water based liquid that contain active ingredients to feed your skin. These should not replace your mosituriser, but instead, your serums should be applied after cleansing, and before your moisturiser. Some serums are suitable to be used morning and night, however using 2 different serums will ensure that you are getting as much goodness into the skin as possible, so be sure to lock in the perfect combo for your skins needs
There many ingredients that you can reach for in a serum. Depending on your skin concerns, and skin type there are a number of actives you should look for.

Dry skin

Vitamin E - A nourishing antioxidant that will protect cells from oxidative damage

Next, you want to be adding an exfoliant to your routine will help to refresh the skin and allow it to absorb all those yummy serum actives you are now using. How often you exfoliate will depend on your skin type. It is generally recommended that you give your skin a gentle exfoliation 2-3 times per week, however this should only be done if your skin shown no sign of irritation. Those with dry, mature or sensitive skin should be exfoliating a little less often, aiming for 1-2 times per week. If you have combination, acne prone, or oily skins, these can generally tolerate an exfoliation 3 times per week.

The final step that you should be treating your skin with each week is a mask. Applying a mask on a regular basis can assist in your skin care concerns by delivering potent ingredients, to target exactly what your skin is needing. To make if fun, I like to have a few to choose from at home and alternate which ones I use each week. This way I know that my skin is not missing out on anything it needs!
Your mask should be applied to clean skin. Applying directly after your exfoliation will not only make it easier to remember, but will also give those actives multiple penetration powers! It is lovely to make mask time “ you time” so if you can, sit back, relax and let it do its job for 15 mins. If finding quiet time is hard, your skin will still benefit from your mask ever if you are in the kitchen or buzzing around the house with the vacuum.
